HOBY + QUILT RAFFLE = GREAT OPPORTUNITY

Attention all Neah-Kah-Nie parents, friends, and supporters: we are raffling off a hand-made quilt to help raise money to send two sophomore students to Willamette university to attend the 2012 Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Oregon seminar in May.

HOBY is a program founded in 1958 by actor and philanthropist, Hugh O’Brian, dedicated to inspiring and empowering youth around the U.S. and internationally to be effective, positive leaders in their schools, communities, and the world. Around 9,000 sophomore students are chosen annually by schools across the country to attend their state conferences. While attending HOBY, students are provided with “unique leadership training, service-learning and motivation-building experiences”. The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership program not associated with any religious or political agenda(s).
Last school-year, Neah-Kah-Nie high school selected students Akshar Patel and Branson Laszlo to attend the 2011 HOBY Washington-Oregon conference in Seattle.

“I think it is fair to say that HOBY has changed our lives forever,” Akshar states. Branson agrees, and adds, “I came home feeling like I could do anything with my life. And it’s not just about the great leadership experience… It’s about meeting a group of bright, informed high school students with a similar passion for leading and doing one’s best.”

Graphics class at NKN designs labels for food bank salmon

Submitted by kathrynh on Mon, 10/18/2010 - 4:36pm

Neah-Kah-Nie High school students are helping with a community effort to harvest, process and can hatchery-raised coho salmon from Waterhouse Falls fish trap on the north fork of the Nehalem River.  This year, 741 fish have been harvested resulting in 4,293  71/2 ounce cans of salmon.

Brad Gerards' Graphics class has taken on the assignment of designing labels for the cans with the specific required information.  The North County Food Bank Board of Directors as well as  President, Imie Camelli, will choose from seven designs to use as the label for the cans.

Once the design is chosen and reproduced, Jim Cox’s volunteer group, The Leos, will be busy with a work day to affix the labels to the cans and then deliver them to the North County Food Bank.  Way to go, Pirates!

Garibaldi Odyssey Teams Earn the Opportunity to Compete at Worlds

Submitted by tracyd on Wed, 04/21/2010 - 10:39am

Garibaldi Grade School hosted the Odyssey of the Mind State Qualifier Competition on April 10th. Two Garibaldi teams received first place awards; this earns them a spot at the Odyssey of the Mind Worlds Competition which will be held late May in Michigan. Odyssey of the Mind is an enrichment program for students of all ages with a focus on problem solving and team collaboration. Garibaldi Grade School had four teams competing this year.  The success of Odyssey has been due to two key factors, the integration into the Y-Stars After school program at Garibaldi Grade and The Mudd Nick Foundation for their dedication to providing the funding for the program. Without them, none of this would have been possible. The teams now have a “real life” problem to solve, how to raise funds to send two teams to the world’s competition. Garibaldi Grade would like to thank all who participated in Odyssey this year, especially to our GGS coaches, Brett Duer, Terry Houchins and Laurie Myers.
